Chiropractic Care

To find out about how Chiropractic works and how it can help you, see Heidi Haavik's Begginer's Guide to Chiropractic above.

Many people first come to see a Chiropractor to help overcome pain. Back pain, neck pain, migraines, shoulder pain and sciatica (leg pain) are the most common reasons. It’s important to explain that Chiropractic does not simply treat pain but in fact treats the underlying causes of many types of pain and symptoms that are associated with musculo-skeletal dysfunction, poor posture and the effects of stress.

Back Pain Relief

The main type of treatment our Chiropractor provides is a spinal adjustment (often referred to as manipulation). The spinal adjustment helps to restore function in the spine, relieves inflammation and muscle tension as well as removing nerve compression. The normal short term reaction to the spinal adjustment is a reduction in pain. Research published in the British Medical Journal that demonstrates the benefit of Chiropractic for relieving pain includes:
  • BEAM trial 2004;
  • TW Meade 1990 & follow up study 1995;
  • The NICE guidelines (2009) also recommend spinal manipulation for persistent lower back pain.

Neck and Shoulder Pain Relief

Because Chiropractic focuses on the entire body, people often find relief from common neck and shoulder pains.

The delicate nerves in the neck (cervical spine) can become irritated and inflamed due to various daily stresses or one off accidents. One such stress is forward head posture, where the head has jutted an inch or two forward of its natural position. This leads to a loss of neck curve and the neck muscles are recruited to work harder to support the head. The natural result is increased muscle tension, stiffness and pain in the neck, shoulders and upper arms.

Gentle Chiropractic spinal adjustments and soft tissue therapy can release the muscle tension and start to correct the postural problem. This of course eases the pain but more importantly starts the process to get the shape of the neck back to how it should be. Combined with exercise the results can be very positive.

Headache and Migraine Relief

Headaches are one of the most common health complaints in the UK. They are painful and debilitating for individuals.
There are two types of headaches:

  1. Primary headaches: when there is no underlying health problem. The most common primary headache disorders are tension-type headache and migraine.
  2. Tension headache is thought to be the most common headache. It is usually associated with stress, high alcohol consumption, poor sleep, depression and dehydration. This headache feels like a dull ache with constant band-like pressure around the front, top and sides of the head.

    Migraine is a common disabling primary headache disorder. It is characterised by severe pounding pain on-top or behind the eye. It can be associated with nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and sounds, changes in appetite, mood and libido. There is research which supports the effectiveness of Chiropractic treatment (manipulation/mobilisation and nutritional therapy) in treating migraine.

    Medication overuse headache is found in patients that suffer from daily headaches and becomes increasingly unresponsive to pain killers. Patients will also notice worsening of the headache symptoms if the medication are missed or delayed.

    Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction affects the joint between the base of the skull and the lower jaw and muscles of mastication. Headaches are one of the symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders.

  3. Secondary headaches: when there is an underlying disorder and include headaches associated with medication overuse, giant cell arteritis, raised intracranial pressure and infection. These are not treated by chiropractic care.
